Autumn Cemetery Exploration Filled with Local History, Folklore, Eerie Echoes, and Dramatic Stone Architecture

Welcome to the Crypt Crawl Urban Hike Series, a multi-week seasonal series inviting you to explore the metro’s most atmospheric, historic, and hidden-gem cemetery grounds on foot!

It's an architectural & cultural neighborhood crawl, set against sweeping autumn canopies, historic mausoleums, and weathered pioneer markers. Connect with a great group of fellow urban explorers, and uncover the rich local history, dramatic architecture, and quiet legends carved into stone across our region.

Whether you are aiming to complete the entire series to discover new corners of the city or just popping in for a single fall adventure, every location brings its own distinct personality, route distance, and local lore.

This Week's Urban Hike: Forest Hill & Calvary Heights A sprawling, urban hike through two of Kansas City’s most expansive and historically monumental grounds. Spanning 160+ acres along the Troost corridor, this route packs rich military history, legendary figures, and incredible rolling ridge lines perfect for a full autumn fitness loop. Local birding is hosted here because of its large, quiet canopies act as an urban haven for migratory birds, raptors and owls.

Distance: 3-4 miles of active hiking across paved cemetery drives, historic gravel lanes and rolling hill climbs.

Terrain Highlights: Continuous rolling hills, wide paved avenues, scenic high ridges with open skyline views, mature tree canopy paths, and gradual elevation gains.

Feature Highlights: The resting place of baseball legend Satchel Paige, historic Civil War battleground monuments (Battle of Westport), ornate Victorian family crypts, and dramatic mausoleum architecture.
