COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Howdy Homemade Ice Cream opened its doors Friday, May 16, at 921 NE Woods Chapel Road in Lee's Summit to offer homemade flavors and create jobs for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The shop features flavors such as Dr. Pepper Chocolate Chip and Cookie Nom'ster — a project supported by TNC Community — and it aims to build an inclusive community.  KMBC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ryan Wagy of Lee's Summit earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration—Marketing at Union University on May 3 during the spring commencement held on the Great Lawn. Attorney Mark Lanier spoke at the ceremony—urging graduates to build their lives on values that last.  Lee's Summit Tribune
  • Community Services League is expanding its New Skills program to help unemployed and underpaid residents get job training in fields such as nursing, transportation, technology and construction — eligible residents must be 18 or older, earn less than $45,000 and live in Jackson, Platte, Clay, Cass, Johnson or Wyandotte counties. In 2024, over 200 students graduated and achieved a 93% success rate in getting hired, with wrap-around services like Uber vouchers and gas cards helping remove barriers to attendance.  KCTV5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Mike Kehoe said Friday morning that a special session may soon be called to revisit a plan to use state funds for stadium development aimed at keeping the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals in Missouri. He estimated the package to be worth between $2.5 billion and $3 billion—House Minority Leader Ashley Aune criticized his approach as rushed.  KMBC
