  • Hundreds lined up outside Journey Church in Lee’s Summit on Wednesday to support the family of 14-year-old Noah Lakey, who died last week in a bike crash near the intersection (SW Jefferson Street and SW Scherer Road) as Hurts Donut Company from Springfield hosted a one-day fundraiser selling over 100 limited-edition tribute donuts.  KCTV5

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Lee's Summit police said a wrong-way driver struck a westbound vehicle at 11:20 p.m. Tuesday on U.S. 50—just east of the MO-291 junction—before the driver was pronounced dead and a second driver was hospitalized with serious injuries.  KMBC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jackson County tax records show errors for over 15,000 commercial properties because five residential parcels are wrongly used—Larry Smith and others have called the mistake a shakedown. Property owners can appeal their assessments until July 14—since the Board of Equalization is fixing a broken upload link, appeals must be emailed as PDFs.  KMBC
  • Jackson County Executive Frank White faces a recall petition as local election boards verified 42,671 signatures—only 231 short of the 42,902 needed. The effort began after the 2023 property assessments led to over 52,000 appeals and has raised new concerns over the 2025 commercial assessments.  KMBC

  • Lee's Summit officials launched free swim lessons in tribute to a Chiefs legend who drowned trying to save children — the program aims to lower drowning risks as studies show formal lessons can cut drownings by 88% — with classes starting soon at local community centers.  KCTV5
