- ➤ A small fire damaged two rooms at Quality Inn in Lee’s Summit on Thursday afternoon, and firefighters responded at the 1000 block of SE Blue Parkway around 1 p.m.—evacuating guests and quickly containing a smoldering blaze that is believed to have been caused by improperly discarded smoking materials. - ➤ Thirty-two-year-old John Phillip Fischbach Jr.—an Independence man accused of using his truck to run over a victim—has been charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action in Jackson County according to court documents. KCTV5

- ➤ Federal funding for public schools faces a nearly $7 billion freeze, and Lee’s Summit School District risks losing over $1.3 million—funds earmarked for ESL, teacher training and academic services. KCTV5

- ➤ Gov. Mike Kehoe signed a law on July 10th that removes the state sales tax on diapers to ease costs for nearly half of Missouri families with children—Sen. Patty Lewis helped sponsor the measure.
