BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Missouri Wine & Grape Board announced on July 15 that 13 wineries—including several from the metro area—were honored after 8 judges blind tasted 260 wines and awarded gold, silver, and bronze medals. Winning wines and additional label awards will be on display at the state fair in Sedalia from Aug. 7 to 17.  KCTV5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Iowa announced that more than 8,000 students made the dean’s list for the spring semester, including local students Zachary Gaylord, Olivia O’Dell, Lalysse Smiley + Sebastian Smith.  Lee's Summit Tribune
  • Gov. Mike Kehoe signed Senate Bill 63—also known as the Homeschoolers Sports Act—that lets home school students join public school sports and activities if they pass required tryouts. MSHSAA sent guidelines on July 15 to help schools comply with the law which takes effect August 28, with the fall season starting on August 11 and the first contest set for August 29.  KCTV5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Yesterday, Jackson County executive Frank White sent a letter to Governor Mike Kehoe proposing a renewal of the 2006 sales tax to fund Arrowhead improvements—restore public safety infrastructure and invest in public health—and said he supports keeping the Royals in Jackson County despite not receiving a plan. The property assessment appeal deadline had passed, and residents who appealed will be contacted by the county.  KMBC
  • Jackson County Executive Frank White added a new stadium proposal on July 15—intended exclusively for the Kansas City Chiefs.  KCTV5
