GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lee’s Summit city council approved new safety rules for World Cup 2026 that limit large fireworks displays, ban permits for special events with over 1000 people unless they are FIFA or city sponsored, and require food trucks to operate only on private property in the central business district. The rules will take effect from June 1 through July 31 to help keep the community safe during the international event — officials said.  KCTV5
  • Former Kansas City Mayor Kay Barnes was sworn in as temporary Jackson County executive on Wednesday afternoon — her term will last no more than 30 days while the legislature selects an interim executive, and she said she will focus on listening without handling major issues like property taxes and the stadium debate.  KCTV5

HEALTH NEWS

  • Midland Care Connection Inc. said it will close its VNA KC home health division in the next 30 days due to low Medicare rates – its hospice care will continue and patients will be moved to other providers.  KCTV5

SPORTS NEWS

  • Liberty High freshman Ju'Lius Byers, 14, injured his spinal cord and suffered a concussion during his season opener at Lee's Summit High and is now working on his recovery. Missouri Western State University surprised him with tickets, school gear + his own jersey while his father and coaches encourage him to keep fighting.  KMBC
  • Mahomes spoke after the Chiefs fell to a record of 2 to 3 following a loss to Jacksonville on Monday. The team is preparing for a Sunday night game against the Lions—head coach Andy Reid and players Isiah Pacheco and Nick Bolton also shared their insights ahead of the matchup.  KCTV5
